Die Rückbesinnung auf natürliche Lebensgrundlagen fand in Wernau relativ bald statt. 1981 wurde die 32 ha große Landschaftsidylle Wernauer Baggerseen vom Land zum Naturschutzgebiet erklärt. Das zweite Ökoparadies ist das Naturschutzgebiet Wernauer Lehmgrube. Die Gemeinde ist auch ein Freizeiteldorado mit mehr als 100 Vereinen, zahlreichen Sportstätten, Freibad, Hallenbad, Stadthalle, Theater und vielfältiger Gastronomie.
