Die Gemeinde hat rund 12.000 Einwohner und ist eine beliebte Wohngemeinde mit Industrie, Gewerbe und Landwirtschaft. Zusätzliche freie Gewerbeflächen, ein direkter Anschluss an die Autobahnanschlussstelle Ludwigsburg Nord sowie die Anbindung an das Stuttgarter Nahverkehrsnetz (20 Minuten bis Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof) machen Tamm zu einem idealen Industriestandort.
Für die Freizeitgestaltung bieten ca. 30 örtliche Vereine vielfältige Möglichkeiten. Mehrere Schulen sind am Ort. Sport- und Tennisanlagen sowie eine vereinseigene Turnhalle können das ganze Jahr genutzt werden. Die ehemalige Kelter wurde 1985 zum Bürgerhaus umgebaut und ist nun Zentrum des kulturellen Lebens in Tamm geworden. In den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten wurde die Infrastruktur weiter verbessert. Wichtige Projekte waren dabei unter anderem die Sanierung des Ortskerns und das 1992 eingeweihte Kleeblatt-Pflegeheim. Seit 1984 unterhält Tamm eine Partnerschaft mit Althofen in Kärnten.
