Noch um die Jahrhundertwende waren Landwirtschaft und Gewerbe die Haupterwerbsquellen der Marbacher Bevölkerung. Nach der Einführung der Gewerbefreiheit 1862 fand die Industrie auch in Marbach Eingang und es entwickelte sich eine beachtliche Leder- und Möbelindustrie, zu der in neuerer Zeit metall- und kunststoffverarbeitende Unternehmen und ein international renommierter Samenzuchtbetrieb hinzugekommen sind.
Die Stadt ist Station der Bundesbahnstrecke Ludwigsburg - Backnang, hat direkte S-Bahn-Verbindung nach Stuttgart und ist durch Busse mit Ludwigsburg und Heilbronn verbunden. Die Bundesautobahn A 81 Stuttgart - Heilbronn ist nur 5 km entfernt. Von Mai bis Oktober kann man mit Schiffen der Neckar-Personenschifffahrt von Marbach aus bis nach Stuttgart und Besigheim fahren.
Das Schiller-Nationalmuseum, das größte Literaturmuseum in der Bundesrepublik, und das Deutsche Literaturarchiv sind Einrichtungen der Deutschen Schillergesellschaft, die weltweiten Ruf genießen.
Marbach am Neckar ist die Geburtsstadt Friedrich Schillers, der hier 1759 zur Welt kam und des Astronomen und Mathematikers Tobias Mayer (1723-1762).
